I'm Evgeniya (Jenia) Gutova, a linguist focused on Berber linguistics, Arabic/Berber bilingualism, and language contact phenomena. My research centers on Berber languages.
I hold a BA in Cuneiform Studies and Languages and Cultures of Mesopotamia and Anatolia from Leiden University, The Netherlands, and an MPhil in Linguistics from the same institution, where my thesis examined Kabyle Berber manuscripts from Algeria written in Arabic script. In 2021, I completed my PhD at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France, with a polylectal grammar of Senhaja Berber from northern Morocco.
I am currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) postdoctoral researcher at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, investigating Arabic influence on Senhaja Berber’s Tense, Aspect, and Modality. Previously, I studied multilingualism among Moroccan Arabic and Berber heritage speakers in Spain’s Moroccan diaspora community as a researcher at the University of Navarra in Pamplona.
